My Animal Shelter by, Eliza Kelly

I have created this animal shelter with information based on a class I took called “All About Animal Shelters and Rescues”. I have also used several books that I got at the library such as “Adopting Pets: How to Choose your New Best Friend” by Bill Gutman, “125 Pet Rescuses: From Pound to Palace: Homeless Pets Made Happy” by National Geographic, and “Complete Guide to Pet Health, Behavior, and Happiness: The Veterinarian’s Approach to At-home Animal Care” by, Gary Weitzman.

My current model shelter has a(n):

  1. swimming pool for animals which keeps them clean, healthy, and entertained.
  2. cat room with climbing towers for the cats. There is a separate area for kittens and a separate area for adult cats.
  3. dog room with toys for the puppies and adult dogs. There is a separate area for puppies and a separate area for adult dogs.
  4. outdoor animal playground which has fun things for the animals at the shelter.
  5. exotic animals (non-cat, non-dog) rooms (eg. heated room for reptiles).
  6. Make-your-own pet treat carts (which also has information about upcoming events taking place the shelter).
  7. laundry/ storage room (to keep animal bedding clean, to house supplies such as food and tools).
  8. low cost spay/ neuter clinic.
  9. path for humans and animals to walk around the outside of the shelter.
  10. restaurant which will have snacks for your pet and for humans too!
  11. meet and greet pet room where humans and pets can get to know each other to determine if they are a good match.
  12. fish tank.
  13. barnyard for farm animals which will also include a petting zoo for the public (some of these animals can be adopted).

Since the last draft, I have added a(n):

  1. feral cat colony. These cats will be spayed/ neutered and released into an outdoor communal housing environment like the one they are used to. These animals can’t be adopted since they aren’t used to people.
  2. gift shop which will have toys, food, housing, bedding, equipment (like leashes), outfits, and medication for animals. The money earned will be used to help the animals and maintain the facilities at the shelter.
  3. lobby where people can look at small animals such as rabbits (that can be adopted) while they wait to sign in to the shelter.
  4. educational center which would include activities such as a kids’ sleepover camp, training for your new pet, etc.

I have included photos of the final animal shelter (phase three), along with the original (phase one), and transitioning stage (phase two) below.
